The Wrekin

The Wrekin Constituency forms a horseshoe shape to the east, north and west of the new town (and constituency) of Telford, in Shropshire.

Named after a 1335ft high volcanic hill which dominates the Shropshire landscape. This is mostly a rural seat made up of the market towns of Wellington (C13th), Newport, Shifnal, and the attractive rural parish of Albrighton.

The seat has a large agriculture sector and is home to Harper Agricultural University College. The seat is also home to several key military establishments including: RAF Cosford (the largest operational RAF base in the world); MOD Donnington which is home to the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO); the Defence Storage and Distribution Agency (DSDA) and the Army Base Repair Organisation (ABRO)

The district general hospital, the Princess Royal Hospital, is also located in the seat.

The seat falls within the municipal jurisdiction of: Shropshire County Council; Bridgnorth District Council and Telford & Wrekin Borough Council (unitary authority).

Part of The Wrekin Parliamentary constituency still falls within the Diocese of Hereford. The majority of the seat falls within the diocese of Lichfield, as does a large part of the remainder of Shropshire.

The area saw the birth of the Industrial Revolution and the constituency centres on the market towns of Wellington and Newport, with large villages such as Albrighton, Edgmond and Shifnal.
